Sweet Treats & Little Hands: Making Heart-Shaped Sugar Cookies Together

February is the perfect excuse to slow down, stay cozy, and do something sweet together—and baking heart-shaped sugar cookies is one of our favorite family traditions. It’s simple, a little messy, and so much fun!

This isn’t about Pinterest-perfect cookies. It’s about flour on the counter, kids sneaking sprinkles, and lots of laughs. These are the moments worth remembering. And even as teenagers they love and always ask for sugar cookies!

Simple Heart-Shaped Sugar Cookie Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 egg

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • ½ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

  2. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

  3. Mix in the egg and vanilla.

  4. Add flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix until dough forms.

  5. Roll dough out on a lightly floured surface (about ¼-inch thick).

  6. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies.

  7. Place cookies on baking sheet and bake for 8–10 minutes, just until edges are set.

  8. Let cool completely before decorating.
